Our first year as a bouncy castle company
After launching as a bouncy castle company (and soft play) just over a year ago, it has been a journey that has had its ups and downs. Lessons learned the right way, but some were also the hard way. The first lesson was stretching ourselves too thin and trying to cover areas far and wide in search of new customers! This lesson taught me that we need to focus on being the best bouncy castle hire in Colchester.Â
There were many other challenges along the way to completing our first full year as a business. But nothing stopped us from pressing forward and earning many 5 star reviews from amazing customers!
What were the challenges we faced in our first year as a bouncy castle company?
Storage
With quite a large financial outlay on equipment and uncertainty on when we will start to receive bookings, the first hurdle was storage. We started off by purchasing a Renault Trafic van and using the back of it for our storage. Naturally that came with its own set of problems and it also limited out growth as business started to take off. It was never ideal trying to get to our Pink Unicorn Castle when it was at the bottom of 4 other castles! That and condensation issues meant that we had to find more suitable storage for the castles and take the financial hit, which we did! By renting a garage we now have a base to store our castles in but also space to add more bouncy castles.
Desirable Castles
When we started out, we purchased our Pink Unicorn Castle which is a 12 x 12 sized castle, a small 10 x 10 Jungle Castle and a 10 x 10 Clown Castle. The Pink Unicorn Castle was an instant hit and for most of the summer it was booked out at least 1 day. But the Jungle Castle and the Clown Castle were simply not very desirable. We certainly should have scoured the market and thought more about the types of castles we offer. Naturally the Pink Unicorn Castle is a hit but many young girls just love Unicorns. We did pick up our Black and Yellow V Shaped Castle which is great for construction and digger themed parties which ended up being a great hit throughout the summer!Â
Travel
In a desperate attempt to grow our name, deliver a top service and also claw back a return on our investment, we did plan to offer services from Witham, to Ipswich and as far out as Clacton on Sea. But after receiving bookings in Witham and then in Clacton it became apparent that the travel between jobs really does add up in terms of fuel and time. So we found that certain days were mainly spent travelling for drop offs and collections. But it’s all part of being a bouncy castle company. However we changed our approach to focus on bouncy castle hire in Colchester, making it free delivery to Colchester locals but charging for the areas that go beyond certain post codes. It wasn’t an easy choice but it meant that whilst the travel was adding up, our fuel was at least covered.
Cleaning
Perhaps the least favourite part of being a bouncy castle company, is the cleaning of the castles! It’s very awkward to clean to begin with, but it’s also quite heartbreaking to see our castles not being well looked after by certain customers either. We try to be fair and don’t put cleaning charges in place because we choose to believe that people will respect our equipment. However we’ve learned that this is not always the case. We like to clean castles prior to being hired and ask that they be inflated when we arrive to collect it so we can inspect that it is clean - and wipe down any areas that may have been missed.
Public Liability Insurance
We knew we needed public liability insurance as it provides safety for our company in the event that anything was to go wrong. So we ensured that we had at least 5 million pounds public liability insurance. What we quickly learned is that halls and venues will ask for a copy of this to ensure that you are legit and protected. This particularly came in handy when we were asked to provide the bouncy castles for the Relay For Life Colchester event earlier in the summer. Without it, we would have lost out on the exposure and the revenue that came from the event.Â

What are the positives from our first year as a bouncy castle company?
Bookings
After launching at the back end of last year and getting the odd booking here and there, we did see a good amount of returning customers this year. So that was very refreshing to see. Our website launched and was taking bookings for us. It was being found on search engines and a lot of our existing customers and friends of the business were tagging us in posts when people were searching for bouncy castle hire in Colchester. So bookings wise, we did very well.
GabriellaÂ
We take our Daughter Gabriella out with us on our bouncy castle hires who was 2 years old when we started and is now 3 years old. Customers are fantastic with her because normally, they have a little one that she can play with. She loves it too and despite the fact that she gets to meet new friends, then we have to move onto the next one, she loves all the different children she meets. Plus, her favourite part of it all is getting to sit right in the front seat of the van!
Better castles
After a good summer of bookings with our Pink Unicorn Bouncy Castle and our Black and Yellow bouncy castle becoming popular, it meant we were in a good position to add to our range and we introduced 2 new castles. A 16 x 18 Party Bouncy Castle with a Slide and also a Dance & Bounce Bouncy Castle with a disco ball. So we were able to upgrade our offering to provide bigger and better bouncy castle hire in Colchester.
5 Star Reviews
When the days are super busy, we sometimes don’t truly appreciate the thank yous we get once we’ve dropped the castle off. Customers are lovely, but after lugging about the heavy castles, hammering the pegs into hard ground and carry heavy sandbags around, we’re just grateful to rest for a moment. But once the day is over and the customers are all happy, the ping on our phone we get to say a new review has landed makes everything so worth it. At the time of writing this, we currently have 22x 5 Star Google reviews. These are so important because they help us to let future customers know that we’re great and that we care! It’s so rewarding for us as a bouncy castle company to receive reviews and positive feedback.
What’s next for us at GabSav’s Party Hire?
Well after our first successful year as Colchester bouncy castle company, we will look to build on the successful year by adding more castles to our offering, including more soft play options as well us looking to scale up with bigger castles for events. We don’t want to outgrow the small family business that we are, slow and steady wins the race as far as we’re concerned!
Thank you for reading our blog and for any events where you need a reliable bouncy castle company, please get in touch.
We cannot wrap this up without giving a shoutout to local companies who have given their advice along the way!Â
